Exploring Project Manager Salaries Across Countries: Interesting Findings

Project Managers (PMs) are a critical role across industries, playing a central role in planning and overseeing projects to ensure they are completed on time and on budget. In the latest “Earning Power: Project Management Salary Survey – Thirteenth Edition” document published by the Project Management Institute (PMI), there are interesting insights into Project Manager salaries and compensation across 21 countries. One of the main highlights is the vast difference in median annual PM salaries across the world. The United States leads the way with the highest median salary of USD 120,000, followed by Australia (USD 103,789) and Germany (USD 99,512). In contrast, the country with the lowest median salary is Egypt at just USD 11,765. In Indonesia, the median annual PM salary is recorded at USD 35,360, placing it below Brazil (USD 35,489) but above Peru (USD 32,363).

The document also highlights the importance of the Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification. In most countries, PMP certification holders have a higher median salary than those without certification. In South Africa and Colombia, the salary gap for PMP holders is more than 65% compared to their peers without certification. In addition to certification, work experience is also a major determinant of salary. In the United States, PMs with more than 20 years of experience have a median salary of USD 150,000, significantly higher than those just starting out in the field (less than 3 years) who have a median salary of around USD 80,000.

Higher positions and responsibilities tend to offer higher compensation. In many countries, roles such as Director of Project Management/PMO and Portfolio Manager command significantly higher salaries than PM level I positions. For example, in the United States, a Director of Project Management can earn an annual salary of around USD 158,500, while a PM level I earns around USD 85,000. The size of the projects managed also affects PM salaries. The larger the team and the project budget, the higher the median salary. In the US, PMs who handle projects with budgets of more than USD 10 million have a median salary of USD 147,272.

From this Document, it is clear that factors such as certification, experience, and position play a significant role in determining the salary of a Project Manager. For professionals who want to increase their salary, pursuing certifications such as PMP and taking on greater project responsibilities can be a strategic move. On the other hand, this Document also helps companies to set competitive salary scales in order to attract and retain the best talent in the project management field.
